Principle of power generation by means of solar cells(solar cell, solar battery) |
Photoelectric cells designed to transform solar energy into electric energy. When light is emitted on the contact surface between a metal and a semiconductor or the PN junction part of a semiconductor, photo-electromotive force is generated as a result of photoelectric effects. Cells that use the contact between a metal and a semiconductor include the selen photoelectric cell and copper sulfite photoelectric cell. Cells that use the semiconductor PN junction includes the silicon photoelectric cell that is used as a solar cell. |
Power generation based on PN junction |
The solar cell is a semiconductor represented by silicon and has been developed based on the advancement of semiconductor technology and semiconductor characteristics. The solar cell has a structure that combines two semiconductor types with different electric properties: N (negative)-type semiconductor and P (positive)-type semiconductor. The border between the two semiconductors is called “PN junction”. |
power energy
- Advantages
-
A source of nonpolluting, limitless clean energy
It is possible to supply power as much as needed, right where it is needed
Easy maintenance and unmanned operation
At least 20 years’ life span
- Disadvantage
-
Dependence on solar radiation, which varies by region
A large area is necessary due to the low energy density.
Applicable only to certain areas of installation; high installation costs
